The Warfighter Need
The SMDC-ONE program demonstrated the ability to rapidly design and develop
a militarily relevant low cost spacecraft with an operational life of 12 months
or longer.
The program is managed by the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command
(SMDC). Miltec developed the nanosatellite.
The goals of the SMDC-ONE technical demonstration program were to complete the design,
development and delivery of eight SMDC-ONE vehicles within Operationally Responsive
Space Tier 3 timelines; Minimize the costs associated with satellite design and
development; Validate the military relevance of the nanosatellite sized vehicle;
and investigate technologies which provide a layered architecture leveraging high-altitude
and responsive space capabilities to meet the urgent operational needs of the
land
component warfighter.
Miltec delivered the eight nanosatellites to the U.S Army Space and Missile Defense
Command on April 28, 2009. Delivery of the eight SMDC-ONE satellites signals the
beginning of launch integration and technical demonstration planning phase.
