Problem/Challenge:
The reliability of electric motors used in Downhole tools has a significant impact on the Return on Investment (ROI) of Oil and Gas Exploration projects. The failure of such tools, which are used up to 6 miles under the earth at ambient temperatures of up to 450°F (230°C) and pressures up to 30,000 psi, can result in very expensive down times and repair costs. Halliburton contacted Ducommun LaBarge Technologies to improve the reliability of the required AC Induction motor.
Ducommun value proposition/solution:
Ducommun LaBarge Technologies' Motion Control Devices (MCD) product group proposed its latest development of high efficiency motors with reduced temperature rise. The motors have been developed with prime oil service companies and provide outstanding performance and reliability.
Outcome/benefits:
Halliburton placed the first production order in 2009 and has used Ducommun’s high efficiency and high temperature motors on a continuous basis.
As a result of this success Halliburton decided to order another motor design which is currently in development.
