Winglet Technology teamed with Cessna to develop a performance enhancing winglet for the Cessna Citation X. The Elliptical Winglet provides significant performance improvements for the Citation X, including increased speed at higher altitudes, improved take-off performance, reduced time-to-climb, and increased range and payload.

The winglet structure is an advanced carbon/epoxy composite design which is resistant to damage. The integrated composite design eliminates external fasteners, giving it a smooth and sleek appearance. The leading edge skins are polished aluminum, and are attached with removable screws, allowing replacement in the event of damage. The attachment to the wing is an interchangeable joint which allows for convenient winglet replacement. The exterior lighting utilizes all LED lights for significantly improved reliability.

Key to development and fabrication of this critical structure is the inherent understanding of fabrication for aerodynamic load demands on the structure and appropriate integrated manufacturing technologies to provide optimum structures.

Outcome/benefits:

The facilities and equipment at the Ducommun Monrovia facility are utilized to their fullest to fabricate the complete winglet assemblies. Monrovia utilizes clean rooms, 5-axis NC milling, 5-axis C-scan NDT, laser ply projection, NC ply cutting, and autoclave curing to fabricate the winglets.
