Tool Design Engineer

Job Summary

Responsible for the conception and design of dies, fixtures, castings and essential production aids and templates as required to support manufacturing efforts.

Main Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions of the Position)

  • Design tooling that meets customer specifications and produces a blueprint part.
  • Maintain digital/electronic data.
  • Generate tooling work orders.
  • Program CNC equipment.
  • Support manufacturing and other departments as an internal customer.
  • Perform cost analysis and tradeoff improvement studies.
  • Create operation sheets, tool drawings, and detail drawings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, preferably in engineering or a technical field
  • Two - five years experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment
  • Strong CAD/CAE skills, Unigraphics preferred
  • Experience in the design, development and application of tools and production methods related to Hot Forming, SPF and/or Machining of titanium, preferred
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience preferred
  • Knowledge of aerospace company specifications and practices
  • Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication, machining, forming and welding
  • Technical writing skills preferred
  • Ability to manage numerous projects and meet deadlines as required
  • Ability to work independently and a good memory for detail
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mylars
  • Strong analytical and communication skills and meticulous work habits
  • Pleasant personality, must interact with all levels of personnel
  • Overtime and weekend work as needed to support manufacturing
  • Read and understand internal procedures and policies
  • Understand and follow through on both verbal and written instructions
  • Team oriented with a continuous improvement outlook
  • Able to learn new screens, reports, functions and simple software programs with assistance

  • Must have good finger dexterity - computer data entry.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.
  • Must be able to talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Must be able to occasionally move and/or lift from 1 - 50 pounds.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those and employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Working conditions are: 75% office environment, 25% manufacturing environment.
  • Noise level is moderate in office environment.
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold and extreme heat.
  • Hearing protection must be worn in designated manufacturing areas.
  • Fully enclosed shoes, leather construction, must be worn in all manufacturing areas.
  • Safety glasses (ANSI Z87 compliant) required in all manufacturing areas.
